ARAYA Hospitality was founded in 2025 to capitalise on a compelling and underserved opportunity in boutique hotel investment — combining the pursuit of strong investor returns with a genuine passion for creating places where guests find something truly worth remembering.
Our focus is on heritage boutique hotels — properties with history, character and soul that cannot be replicated. We believe that preserving and celebrating what makes these places unique is not only the right thing to do, but the smartest investment thesis. Guests are increasingly drawn to authentic, storied experiences over generic luxury — and it is precisely this uniqueness that commands premium positioning, builds loyal audiences, and creates the most compelling exit opportunities when the time comes.
Our Founder
Damiaan van Ballegooijen is the Founder of ARAYA Hospitality. After nearly 15 years in Investment Banking — first at NIBC in the Netherlands and later for over a decade at Robert W. Baird in London — Damiaan advised on fundraising, financing, and M&A transactions globally, working alongside Private Equity Funds and Founders. Feeling the pull towards a deeper sense of purpose and impact, he took a bold step: leaving the world of finance behind to build something of his own.
Damiaan brings to ARAYA Hospitality a genuinely global perspective shaped by a life lived across four continents — from Syria and Scotland to Brunei, the Netherlands, China, Argentina, Uganda, England, and now the UAE. Educated in international business and finance in the Netherlands and China, he further deepened his expertise in the hospitality sector by completing the Hotel Real Estate Investments and Asset Management certificate program at Cornell University.
At the heart of ARAYA Hospitality lies a deeply personal mission: to invest in heritage boutique hotels, preserving their history and character while sharing those rare, authentic experiences with guests and investors from around the world. It is this combination of deal-making expertise, cross-cultural fluency, and a passion for protecting the world's most characterful places that drives Damiaan's vision to leave a long-lasting legacy.
The Name “ARAYA”
Every great name carries meaning. ARAYA carries many.
In Thai and Sanskrit, it means noble and righteous — the standard we hold ourselves to in every transaction, every partnership, and every property we touch. In Hebrew, lioness — strength, conviction, and grace under pressure. In Tigrinya in Ethiopia, leader by example — present, hands-on, and accountable. Not one who instructs from a distance.
In Japanese, it evokes a new valley — an undiscovered landscape waiting for the right vision to bring it to life. Not unlike the heritage properties we seek out. In Spanish and Basque, Araya is rooted in the natural landscape — a place where paths converge. A meeting point between people, capital, and opportunity.
